GLOSSARY of Internet Terms
Banners
The most common unit of advertising on the Web. Also
referred to as a banner ad, a banner is a typically rectangular
advertisement placed on a Web site either above, below or on the
sides of the Web site's main content and is linked to the
advertiser's own Web site. Buyers of banner advertising either
pay for every visitor they get, or for every time a banner is
shown. Alternatively, some sites offer a fixed, monthly price.
There are also some popular banner exchange programs like The
Link Exchange and Commonwealth--that rotate banners through
their members sites. The idea is simple -you allow to place a
banner on your site and they allow you to place your banner on
various other web sites . They keep track of the number of hits
you get there, and the more hits your site gets, the more times
your banner is displayed on other members' sites.
